It's too bad the hand of God didn't help the folks on Flight 93.

This sort of thinking INFURIATES my ass. It's an insult to anybody who ever lost a loved one in an airline crash.

It does sound moronic and selfish from that point of view. However, when people are in despair and praying for a miracle, when they have good fortune, they automatically attribute their good luck to God. I'm sure the folks on Flight 93 prayed just as hard and were every bit as "deserving" of divine intervention but they didn't get the chance to state their disappointment in God for slipping up.

As Lightfoot wrote: "Does anyone know where the love of God goes" in the course of a disaster.

The biggest assholes blame the disaster on the sins of the victims - divine judgement. Attributing a good end to God seems benign in comparison. But you are right - it's all the same thing isn't it?

What gets me is sports teams praying for a win. Seriously? You think God loves one team more than another and that the win even matters? Or for that matter - one country more than another?

Or one planeload of people more than another.

I think people have entirely the wrong idea about God. It's no wonder there are atheists. I don't believe in that God either.

That doesn't stop me from praying selfishly though. I just really don't expect any answers.
